About Srirangapatna

Ranganatha swamy temple Srirangapatna, a historical place belongs to Mandya district of Karnataka state in India. This place is located on the Mysore-Bangalore highway and is at a distance of 15 KM from Mysore. This place is also called as the island fortress - Srirangapatna. This was the capital of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, popularly known as tiger of Mysore. Tipu's summer palace is now converted as a museum. Tipu Sultan died after a long battle with the English kingdom. The area where his body was found is well marked. One must visit this place and pay respect to this great Indian hero.

How to reach
Dariya DaulatPeople travelling from Bangalore can get down at Srirangapatna which is just on the main road proceeding towards Mysore. Both bus and train service available. Visitors travelling by train have to move a kilometer or two as the train station is at the other end of the town. They can first visit the Ranganatha temple first and later visit the other places. People can complete their visit to Srirangapatna within 2-3 hours and proceed towards Mysore. People visiting this place from Mysore can travel in the same Bangalore-Mysore road and the distance is only 15Kms. The normal trip package is to visit Srirangapatna, Ranganathittu bird sanctuary and Brindavan gardens which are located closeby.

Places to visit in Srirangapatna
Ranganatha Temple The visiting places in Srirangapatna are spread both the sides of the Bangalore-Mysore road. While travelling towards Mysore, the following places are located to the right side. Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple, the famous sleeping statue of Lord Ranganatha can be seen here. Car parking available nearer to the temple premesis. Horse riding can be experienced if interested. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple. There is no place to keep the cameras so visitors can carry the gadgets along with them. Outside the temple, there are lot of handicrafts availalbe at a very reasonable price and bargain possible. Beside the temple (to the North side) visitors can see Colonel Bailey's Dungeon (jail). Photography is possible in this area. Beside the Jail the river Kaveri flows. People can take their vehicles nearer to this place and park.
Few more places to see in this area are, Death place of Tippu where the body of Tippu was found. Lalmahal Palace (ruins of ancient palace), Thomas Inman's Dungeon and an Obelisk of war memorial are also located nearby. The Jamia Masjid is also situated on the way to these places.

Dariya Daulat Bagh To the other side of the Bangalore-Mysore road, there are few more places which are must to be seen. The first one to be seen is the Dariya Daulat Bagh, one kilometer from main road. This is also known as the Summer palace of Tipu Sultan and was constructed during 1784 A.D. Vehicle parking is available nearer to the place. Entry fees is INR 5 (USD 2 for foreigners). No fee for still cameras and fee INR 25 for video cameras. Inside the palace photography is strictly prohibited (people can carry their cameras along with them). The walls in the palace are painted with war scenes and portraits of various kings. Swords, Canons are exhibited in the palace. There is a beautiful park outside the palace where people can enjoy and relax. Well maintained toilets available. No parking fee for vehicles. Visiting hours is from 9 to 17 Hrs.

Gumbaz Proceeding in the same road, people can visit Gumbaz, 2Kms from Dariya Daulat Bagh. This tomb and Mosque was built by Tipu Sultan as a tribute to his father Hyder Ali. It also consists of cenotaphs of Hyder Ali, Fakr-Un-Nisa (Tipu Sultan's wife) and Tipu Sultan. Cenotaphs of some more relatives can also be seen in this place. This is constructed in a typical islamic architectural style. Parking place is available nearer to the place. Well maintained bath rooms and toilets are also situated here. Entry fees is INR 5 (USD 2 for foreigners). Vehicle parking is INR 20.

Dodda gosai ghat Nearer to Gumbaz, there are few more visiting places which can be seen, the Dodda Gosai Ghat, Sangam and Nimishamba temple. Dariya Daulat, Gumbaz, Gosai ghat and Sangam are located in a place called Ganzaam. Gosai ghat is a picnic spot which is only 2Km from Gumbaz. Sri Kashi Visweswara swamy temple is also located here beside the river Kaveri. Boating facility available. People can travel nearer to this place by their vehicle (parking fees INR 5). The meeting place of rivers Loka Pavani and the bifurcated Kaveri rivers is called Triveni Sangam located one kilometer from Gumbaz. This is a picnic spot, boating facility available. Transportation is possible till this place (parking fee INR 5). People can proceed towards Nimishamba temple (2kms from Gumbaz) located on the banks of river Kaveri. This is a well known temple in southern India for the fact that, people visiting this temple will get their wishes true. Normal way of visiting all these places is to proceed towards Gosai ghat from Dariya Daulat, and come back and proceed towards Gumbaz, and then to Triveni Sangam. After Triveni sangam, come back in the same way and take a right turn after Gumbaz to visit Nimishamba temple.
